'Free lunch' claim doesn't hold up in downstate vs. Chicago schools

Vis The Southern (link below).  File under Madigan’s Baloney…..

A report state Sen. Dave Luechtefeld’s staff recently compiled shows Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan’s claim downstate schools “get a free lunch” on state funding is misleading.

Madigan made the statement several weeks back in defending the idea local school districts would have to start paying into teacher pensions to address the state’s nearly $100 billion backlog. Luechtefeld, R-Okawville, contends it’s unfair to criticize the share of tax revenue Southern Illinois schools get, when Chicago schools get what he says is a disproportionate amount of money, considering the city’s public school system accounts for just 18 percent of the state’s average daily attendance.

“It’s pretty glaring we don’t have a free lunch,” Luechtefeld said in an interview with The Southern Illinoisan Friday.
