Chavez to Obama: I'd vote for you, and you for me - chicagotribune.com

Heck of an endorsement,

CARACAS (Reuters) - With both presidents facing tight re-election fights, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez gave a surprise endorsement to Barack Obama on Sunday - and said the U.S. leader no doubt felt the same.
"I hope this doesn't harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I'd vote for Obama," the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting.

Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Venezuela's election is next weekend.
"Obama is a good guy ... I think that if Obama was from Barlovento or some Caracas neighborhood, he'd vote for Chavez," the president told state TV, referring to a poor coastal town known for the African roots of its population.

Univision finds more Fast and Furious headlines as victims | The Daily Caller

Thank God for Univision ‘cause MSM doesn’t want to cover this story.

Spanish-language television network Univision plans to air a television special that it said reveals more violence than previously known, as well as the stories of how many more Operation Fast and Furious victims were killed, the network announced in a Friday release.

“The consequences of the controversial ‘Fast and Furious’ undercover operation put in place by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2009 have been deadlier than what has been made public to date,” the network said. “The exclusive, in-depth investigation by Univision News’ award-winning Investigative Unit — Univision Investiga — has found that the guns that crossed the border as part of Operation Fast and Furious caused dozens of deaths inside Mexico.”

Write About Terrorism? Nah, Let’s All Bash Mitt Romney Instead! - The Daily Beast

Kirsten Power’s conclusion from her column on MSM’s ignoring the terror attack in Libya that took the lives of our Ambassador and three other staff.

We know now that before the attacks on 9/11 that killed 3,000 Americans, more attention should have been paid to attacks against the U.S. overseas. These were warnings of what was to come. They say curiosity killed the cat. In this case, lack of curiosity on the part of the American media very well may kill more Americans.

Economic Patriotism or Socialism with a Liberal Face

Socialism with a Liberal Face maybe.  Via RBO2, link below including the video.

The occasionally-maligned Lou Dobbs sort of gets it. Earlier today he tweeted: Pres. Obama’s new stump phrase “economic patriotism” has [an] Orwellian cast that is both meaningless and vaguely sinister. Syn., redistribution.

Erika Johnson at Hot Air dissected and attempted to interpret the Obama ad to which Dobbs alludes (below) as code language for “more stimulus”. Johnson concludes with “‘New economic patriotism’? Does that sound severely creepy to anyone else?”

Severely creepy is an understatement.

Panetta: We’ve Lost Track of Syrian Chemical Weapons | The E-Ring

Very bad news reported here.

The U.S. has lost track of some of Syria’s chemical weapons, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Friday, and does not know if any potentially lethal chemicals have fallen into the hands of Syrian rebels or Iranian forces inside the country.

“There has been intelligence that there have been some moves that have taken place. Where exactly that’s taken place, we don’t know.” Panetta said, in a Pentagon press briefing.

Panetta said that the “main sites” in Syria storing chemical weapons with which the Pentagon is most concerned remain secured by the Syrian military. But there is “some intelligence” that “limited” movements of weapons from other sites have occurred, he said, “for the Syrians to better secure what they – the chemicals.”

Panetta's statement follows reporting that Syrian rebels claim to have taken control of a military base that contains chemical weapons.

New poll: Romney overtakes Obama on terrorism

So much for Jen Paski’s Obama killed Osma frame as winner.

The foreign-policy results of the new Bloomberg National Poll haven't gotten much attention yet, but the survey contains some bad news for the Obama campaign. According to the poll, Mitt Romney has a 48-42 advantage over Barack Obama on the question of which candidate would be tougher on terrorism. Romney, in other words, has encroached on one of Obama's signature strengths.

Double Dip Recession

I think we’re headed for one.

New durable goods orders in August fell by the most since the recession and a separate reading on the broader U.S. economy came in much weaker than expected. But weekly jobless claims sank to a two-month low, in a hopeful sign for the labor market.

US Durable Goods Orders Drop Worst Since Recession - US Business News - CNBC

And it’s a self created one: Morning Bell: Obama and Congress Are Choosing to Cause a Recession,

What makes this recession different, and predictable, is that the disruptive force is Washington policies and, even more, Washington behaviors—policies and behaviors for which the nation can thank the Congress and especially President Obama. The policy is Taxmageddon. The behavior is intentional, insistent inaction. The consequence is recession. The response should and will be outrage. – J D Foster

OBAMA PROMISED A NEW GREEN JOB FOR EVERY LAID OFF FACTORY WORKER BUT MANUFACTURERS HAVE SHED OVER 580,000 JOBS UNDER HIS ADMINISTRATION

OBAMA 2012: "Create 1 Million Manufacturing Jobs" ("Table," Obama For America Ad, 9/27/12)

OBAMA 2008: Obama Proposed Creating "Millions Of New Jobs" In Manufacturing By Investing In Clean-Energy. "Barack Obama believes this challenge is also a moment of great opportunity for the manufacturing sector. He will invest in climate-friendly energy development that will transform the economy and create millions of new jobs. Obama will invest $150 billion over 10 years to advance the next generation of biofuels and fuel infrastructure, accelerate the commercialization of plug-in hybrids, promote development of commercial scale renewable energy, invest in low emissions coal plants, and begin transition to a new digital electricity grid. A principal focus of this fund will be devoted to ensuring that technologies that are developed in the U.S. are built by American workers and deployed around the globe." ("Barack Obama: Strengthen Domestic Manufacturing To Create Jobs And Meet The Challenges Of The 21st Century," Obama For America, 2008)

  • In 2008, Obama Promised To Create Five Million New Jobs. OBAMA: "And then we can invest $15 billion a year in renewable sources of energy, building wind turbines and solar panel, a new electricity grid, the next generation of biofuels, invest in clean coal technology, find ways that we can create five million new jobs, new energy jobs, all across it country, jobs that pay well, jobs that can't be outsourced." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At Campaign Event, Cleveland, OH, 11/2/08)

The Manufacturing Sector Has Lost Over A Half Million Jobs Under Obama

Since Obama Took Office, The Nation Has Lost 582,000 Manufacturing Jobs. (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, Accessed 9/27/12)

"Manufacturing Has Been A Drag On The Slow U.S. Economic Recovery, Which Is Stalling And Struggling To Add Jobs Now Some Three Years After The Brutal Recession And Financial Crisis Ended." "ISM's index of national factory activity fell to 49.6 in August, from 49.8 in July, and just shy of the 50.0 median estimate in a Reuters poll of economists. A reading below 50 indicates contraction in the key sector. Manufacturing has been a drag on the slow U.S. economic recovery, which is stalling and struggling to add jobs now some three years after the brutal recession and financial crisis ended."(Jonathan Spicer, "Manufacturing Another Headache For U.S. Economy, Reuters, 9/4/12)

  • FactCheck.org: Manufacturing Represents "A Disproportionate Share Of Job Losses Since Obama Took Office." "In fact, manufacturing jobs represent a disproportionate share of job losses since Obama took office. In all, the U.S. has lost a net 864,000 non-farm jobs since January 2009 - a decline of one half of 1 percent. But manufacturing jobs are down 5 percent since then. One recent study found that at the current pace, it will take until 2020 for the U.S. to recover the manufacturing jobs lost since 2007." Independent Budget Experts Say Obama's Debt Plan Falls Short Of Its Claimed $4 Trillion In Savings. "President Obama projects that his new plan for reducing the federal debt will save more than $3 trillion over the next decade by raising taxes on the wealthy and slashing spending on a host of government programs, from farm subsidies to federal worker pensions. But independent budget experts said the blueprint that Obama unveiled Monday - which White House officials say would save more than $4 trillion when added to earlier budget deals this year - appears to fall short of his target." (Lori Montgomery And Jia Lynn Yang, "Budget Analysts Say Obama Deficit Plan Is Likely To Miss Its Targets," The Washington Post , 9/19/11)

  • "Obama Exaggerated...Actually, One Independent Analysis Criticized A Central Part Of The President's Plan As A 'Gimmick.'" "Obama exaggerated when he claimed 'independent experts' say his deficit-reduction plan would reduce the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years. Co-Chairs Of Obama's Fiscal Commission Erskine Bowles And Alan Simpson On Obama's $4 Trillion Target: "Unfortunately, His Proposal Falls Short Of This Goal …" "We are encouraged that President Obama has embraced the goal of stabilizing the debt and the target of achieving at least $4 trillion in deficit reduction. Unfortunately, his proposal falls short of this goal by counting war savings that were already planned; and while it does (barely) stabilize the debt, it does so at a dangerously high level and with no margin for error. We are disappointed, too, that the president did not address the long-term solvency of Social Security." FOUR YEARS AGO, OBAMA PROMISED TO END OUR DEPENDENCE ON MIDDLE EAST OIL BUT ON HIS WATCH IMPORTS FROM SAUDI ARABIA HAVE RISEN 20 PERCENT

OBAMA 2012: "Cut Oil Imports In Half" ("Table," Obama For America Ad, 9/27/12)

OBAMA 2008: Obama Promised In 2008: "And For The Sake Of Our Economy, Our Security, And The Future Of Our Planet, I Will Set A Clear Goal As President: In 10 Years, We Will Finally End Our Dependence On Oil From The Middle East." (Sen. Barack Obama, Acceptance Speech Remarks At The Democratic National Convention , Denver, CO, 8/28/08)

Obama's Policies Have Contributed To A Greater Dependence On Middle East Oil

"The United States Is Increasing Its Dependence On Oil From Saudi Arabia, Raising Its Imports From The Kingdom By More Than 20 Percent This Year …" "The United States is increasing its dependence on oil from Saudi Arabia, raising its imports from the kingdom by more than 20 percent this year, even as fears of military conflict in the tinderbox Persian Gulf region grow. The increase in Saudi oil exports to the United States began slowly last summer and has picked up pace this year. Until then, the United States had decreased its dependence on foreign oil and from the Gulf in particular." (Clifford Krauss, "U.S. Reliance On Oil From Saudi Arabia Is Growing Again," The New York Times , 8/17/12)

  • Oil Refiners Have Cited "Insufficient Pipeline Connections Between The United States And Canadian Oil Sands Fields" As A Reason For Importing More Oil From The Middle East. "In the United States, several oil refining companies have found it necessary to buy more crude from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to make up for declining production from Mexico and Venezuela, insufficient pipeline connections between the United States and Canadian oil sands fields, and the fallout from the 2010 BP disaster, which led to a yearlong drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico." (Clifford Krauss, "U.S. Reliance On Oil From Saudi Arabia Is Growing Again," The New York Times , 8/17/12)

"In A Politically Explosive Decision," Obama Rejected The Keystone Pipeline, Delaying A Tough Choice Until After The November Elections. "In a politically explosive decision, President Barack Obama on Wednesday rejected plans for a massive oil pipeline through the heart of the United States, ruling there was not enough time for a fair review before a looming deadline forced on him by Republicans. His move did not kill the project but could again delay a tough choice for him until after the November elections." OBAMA'S EDUCATION INITIATIVES HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE COSTLY FAILURES

OBAMA 2012: "100,000 Math And Science Teachers" ("Table," Obama For America Ad, 9/27/12)

OBAMA 2010: In January 2010, Obama Announced A $250 Million Initiative To Train More Than 100,000 Math And Science Teachers Over The Next Decade. "President Barack Obama is announcing a $250 million initiative Wednesday to train math and science teachers in an effort to reach his administration's goal of moving American students from the middle to the top of the pack in those subjects over the next decade. 'The quality of math and science teachers is the most important single factor influencing whether students will succeed or fail in science, technology, engineering and math,' Obama said in a statement. The money will help prepare 10,000 new teachers and train 100,000 more, the administration said." (Julie Pace, "Obama To Announce Teacher Training Initiative," The Associated Press, 1/6/10)

Obama's Stimulus Spent $68 Billion On Education Block Grants Yet Local Governments Still Laid Off Hundreds Of Thousands Of Teachers

Since Obama Took Office, Local Governments Have Shed 289,200 Education Jobs. (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, Accessed 9/27/12)

A National Bureau Of Economic Research Working Paper Found That It Cost $567,000 In Stimulus Funds For Every Education Job Saved. "If we divide the $68 billion spent on education block grants by 80,000 jobs held for 18 months, this implies a cost of $567,000 per job year. While that number sounds large, the raw data show that changes in educational employment were small relative to spending by the Department of Education. One needs to construct a counter factual where education employment falls very steeply in order to generate a per job cost that is in a reasonable range." (James Feyer and Bruce Sacerdote, "Did The Stimulus Stimulate? Real Time Estimates Of The Effects Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act," National Bureau Of Economic Research , February 2011)

  • It Also Found That Stimulus "Transfers To The States To Support Education And Law Enforcement Appear To Have Little Effect." "Perhaps most intriguing is our analysis of how the impacts on employment appear to differ by type of spending. Transfers to the states to support education and law enforcement appear to have little effect. This is consistent with a model where the states consider the grants to be temporary and therefore avoid making permanent changes based on the transfer. States may have used the money to lower borrowing or limit tax increases. Cogan and Taylor (2010) find that this is the case." (James Feyer and Bruce Sacerdote, "Did The Stimulus Stimulate? Real Time Estimates Of The Effects Of The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act," National Bureau Of Economic Research, February 2011; Scribd Link )

Due To Its High Cost, Obama's New Plan To Boost The Teacher Corps Has Had Trouble Finding Support In The Democrat Senate

The White House Is Launching A Master Teacher Corps To Increase The Number Of STEM Teachers. "The Obama administration is launching a new teacher initiative designed to retain and train the next generation of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers. The administration is launching a Master Teacher Corps, composed of top educators in those fields - who will be given an annual stipend on top of their salary. According to the White House, 50 teachers will be chosen across 50 different locations. The plan is to explain the corps over the next four years to add more than 10,000 teachers." (Byron Tau, "White House Launches Teacher Corps," Politico's "44," 7/18/12)

  • The Administration Says It Will Be Funded Through Obama's 2013 Education Budget Request. "According to the administration, funds for the new corps will come from the president's 2013 education budget request that Congress is currently considering." (Byron Tau, "White House Launches Teacher Corps," Politico's "44," 7/18/12)

Due To The High Price Tag, The Plan Is "Likely To Fall Flat Relatively Quickly." "The idea embodies some of the Obama administration's most cherished concepts-pay for performance, competitions among local jurisdictions, and asking Congress for money. The last concept probably won't work. A Republican-led Congress is unlikely to sign off on $1 billion for such a project. That means the competitive and merit pay elements also are likely to fall flat relatively quickly. Even so, the administration is devoting $100 million to the project now, with 35 school districts already lined up to help select 50 winning teachers. President Obama is requesting $1 billion to increase this initial micro-corps to 10,000 teachers." (Fawn Johnson, "Obama's Plan For Teaching Corps Could Fall Flat," National Journal, 7/18/12)

  • "The House And Senate Both Voted Down Obama's Budget Earlier In The Year, Making It Far From Certain That Obama Will Be Able To Get Congressional Approval To Spend $1 Billion On Master Teachers." "The administration will make $100 million available immediately out of an existing fund to incentivize top-performing teachers. Over the longer term, the White House said it plans to launch the program with $1 billion included in Obama's budget request for fiscal year 2013. But the House and Senate both voted down Obama's budget earlier in the year, making it far from certain that Obama will be able to get congressional approval to spend $1 billion on master teachers." (Josh Lederman, "Master Teacher Corps: Barack Obama Proposes $1 Billion Effort To Boost Students' Achievement In Math Science," The Associated Press, 7/18/12)
  • "Democrats Tried To Secure Funding For A Similar Program Last Year, But The Proposal Didn't Reach Either The House Or Senate Floors."("Obama Proposes $1 Billion Math And Science Teaching Corps," NBC News, 7/18/12)

Don’t Plan On It

Why Won't Obama Call It Terrorism?

Our Middle East policy is in disarray, that’s why.  Below from Reince Priebus,

How can President Obama address a crisis if he can’t be honest about its causes? How can he fight terrorism if he won’t identify terrorist acts?

Amid Middle East turmoil and six weeks before the election, President Obama refuses to have an honest conversation with the American people. The country deserves honesty, not obfuscation, from our president.

At first, the administration struggled to define the attack, at one stage even making the odd claim that it had nothing to do with America or American policy. But by now, nearly everyone but the president himself has finally admitted: the attack was the work of terrorists.

Modi emerging as popular leader of Muslims in Gujarat

Good article for those who find Joe Walsh’s support to invite Narendra Modi a bit of pandering to Islamophobia among the 8th’s Hindu community.

Of all the politicians, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is emerging as the popular leader of Muslims in a the state which saw a Muslim massacre in 2002.

Modi has grown apologetic and is trying to woo the minorities after the 2002 programme. His efforts are bearing fruit and the ground situation bares the fact he would return to power with comfortable majority in the 2012 Legislative Assembly elections.

First Muslim support was seen in Gujarat in 2010 during civic polls in which the BJP swept all the six municipal corporations on account of 30 per cent Muslims voted for it.

The party gained two-third majority in the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. This huge political change came about after eight years of the Gujarat massacre. It would have seemed a little funny some years ago if someone had predicted that Muslims would give a massive vote for the BJP.

The situation is tilting in Modi’s favour, partly due to his development programmes and 4000 days of good governance, and partly due to panic in the Congress party.

Urgent Call for Conservative Election Judges in Cook County

For the first time ever, a serious effort is underway to fill every Republican election judge position in Cook County with an actual Republican. In years past, the Republican Party didn’t have the manpower in Illinois to fill all these election judge slots so Democrats would just take them over in Cook County. This has enable voter fraud to happen for years since one party should never be trusted manning a polling place alone.

This year, a suburban mom named Sharon Meroni launched a crusade to fill every Republican election judge position with a Republican in Cook County. She is close to making the impossible happen, but is still 400 election judges short as of this writing. The deadline for finding people to apply for these slots is on Thursday 9/27/2012 so we are down to the wire.

Read the rest below.  Pass it on if you’re not in Cook County.

STATEMENT BY SENATORS McCAIN, GRAHAM AND AYOTTE ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP

September 25, 2012

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today released the following joint statement on President Obama’s recent comments about “bumps in the road” in the Middle East on his watch:

“President Obama recently said the broader Middle East has been experiencing some ‘bumps in the road.’ If the President had taken some time to hold even one meeting with his foreign colleagues during his visit to the U.N. General Assembly in New York today, perhaps they would have told him what has really happened in the Middle East on his watch.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when American embassies, and those of our friends and allies, are attacked by hateful mobs who also murder their fellow citizens, allegedly because of a disgusting and bigoted video. That is the result of extremists who would seize on any opportunity to further their ideological agenda – extremists who have been gaining ground over the past two years.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when Al-Qaeda fighters and their terrorist allies have been gaining ground in Libya, a country the United States helped to liberate but has not sufficiently supported in its ongoing struggle against lawlessness and violent extremism.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when the relationship between the United States and Israel has never been worse at a time when the threat from Iran has never been greater and when events in the Middle East have never been more tumultuous or uncertain.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when Israel and our Gulf partners have never had less confidence in the willingness of the American President to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when more than 25,000 men, women, and children have been slaughtered by the Assad regime in Syria – a conflict that is destabilizing the region, putting weapons of mass destruction at risk, creating a new safe haven for Al-Qaeda and its terrorist allies, and growing more dangerous by the day for the United States and our allies. That is the result of the President’s complete lack of leadership and unwillingness to take the necessary actions together with our friends and allies that could end the violence and create the conditions for a negotiated transition to a more peaceful, democratic future in Syria.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when a small group of insurgents are able to destroy nearly a quarter of a billion dollars in U.S. fighter aircraft in a single attack in Kandahar – or when the ‘insider attacks’ against our forces and those of our allies have risen to such an extent that our commander has suspended training and joint operations with Afghan units, which is the core of our strategy to succeed. That is the result this Administration’s consistent efforts to cut corners in the war in Afghanistan – giving our commanders fewer troops than they recommended and withdrawing them in larger numbers and at a faster pace than our commanders advised, which is resulted in the very additional risks to our mission that our military leaders warned.

“It is not a ‘bump in the road’ when violence in Iraq is rising, the Iraqi political system is growing more authoritarian, Iranian meddling and influence is growing, and the Maliki government is allowing Iran to fly planeloads of weapons and fighters into Syria through Iraqi airspace. That is the result of a U.S. President who has squandered the gains of the surge in order to fulfill his campaign promise of withdrawing all U.S. troops from Iraq, even at the expense of our national security interests.

“None of these events are ‘bumps in the road.’ They are failures of American leadership. And they call for the United States to begin leading more actively, rather than trying to lead from behind.”

PSAKI: let me be clear here, thomas. the president has talked about how the middle east is going through historic reforms right now. when he gave his speech in cairo, 3 1/2 years ago, he said these reforms will not be on a straight line. we know this is going to be hard. and we're committed to do it. it's pretty rich coming from a candidate who every time he dips in foreign waters it's a disaster. the president has killed osama bin laden, decimated al qaeda, brought the international community together to rally against iran.a mated al qaeda, brought the international community together to rally against iran. he's shown leadership that speaks for itself. and so we're not going to be drawn into this ridiculous debate with a candidate who has shown no ability to serve as commander in chief.
Killing Bin Laden doesn't seem to have been the wisest thing either.  I'd much rather have him sitting in Gitmo explaining plans and especially who else in the world helped him; especially in Pakistan.

The PJ Tatler » President Obama Fails to Call Benghazi Assault a Terrorist Attack

Seems calling Terror as Terror is too much to ask of Obama.

Nowhere in his UN address does President Obama clearly express anger at the attack on American sovereignty as such. Nowhere does he show outrage for the desecration of the American flag as the world saw in Cairo and elsewhere. Nowhere does he challenge the Muslim Brotherhood to stop playing two-faced games, denouncing the riots on the one hand and egging them on on the other. When Obama does describe them as attacks on America, he quickly moves to thanking other governments for their help or connecting the attacks to an “assault on the ideals upon which the United Nations was founded.”

This president tends to universalize and preach when a clear, brief statement of anger, resolve and clarity would do. How about just being outraged that on your watch, Mr. President, America came under attack again by the same forces that have attacked us relentlessly for the past several decades? How about saying to them, “Enough is enough” and serving notice that America bitter and unstoppable foe of anyone who attacks us, anywhere, anytime, for any reason?

Is that too much to ask?

The Original Chickies Beef | Hillside, IL

Had a hot dog at Chickies for lunch today.  A Vienna Beef dog, boiled, served Chicago style (no ketchup).  Best part though were the hand cut fries cooked just the way I like them: nice and brown with a few crunchy ones at the bottom.  Not soggy with grease.  A perfect order of fries.

Will try the Beef in a few days and report back.  Their facebook page says the use their own Beef recipe.

Chickies is up against a Beef powerhouse a few blocks south.  Will be nice to have some options.

They’re located on Wolf Road in what used to be the old Carms III Beef stand.  Face book page here.

RJC: Israeli Concerns Over Iran Are Not “Noise”

RJC’s statement on “Noise”.

Washington, D.C. (September 24, 2012) — The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) commented today on remarks by Pres. Barack Obama in a “60 Minutes” interview that aired last night.

When asked about Israel’s concerns about the very real threat of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, Pres. Obama dismissed them as “noise.”
(Video and quotes from the interview are at The Weekly Standard web site.)

RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks responded:

“The urgent and well-founded concerns of Israel about the continuing Iranian nuclear arms program are not ‘noise.’ In this area, as in so many others, American national security interests and Israeli security interests are aligned: we cannot allow Iran to develop the capacity to create and deploy nuclear weapons.

“Diplomacy and sanctions have not impeded the Iranians’ progress toward their goal, and recent reports from the IAEA and the Iranian regime corroborate the Israelis’ long-held view that Iran has lied to international inspectors and gotten much farther along the path to nuclear weapons than has previously been acknowledged.

“By dismissing Israel’s and the international community’s legitimate concerns about Iran as mere ‘noise,’ Pres. Obama yet again displays his Jimmy Carter-like naiveté when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. In these dangerous times, that puts the United States and our friends and allies around the world in jeopardy.”

Deconstructing Obama's "I Haven't Raised Taxes" comment

An RNC repaid response on the 60 minutes interview and Obama's "I haven't raised Taxes" comment.

Tonight On 60 Minutes, President Obama Claimed “I Haven't Raised Taxes”:

President Obama: “I Haven't Raised Taxes.” OBAMA: Well, it's a lot of rhetoric, but there aren't a lot of facts supporting it. Taxes are lower on families than they've been probably in the last 50 years. So I haven't raised taxes.  I've cut taxes for middle class families by an average of $3,600 per typical family.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

But Just This Week, The CBO Issued A Report Estimating That Obamacare Will Raise Taxes On Nearly Five Million Middle-Class Americans:

The Congressional Budget Office Estimates Nearly 6 Million Americans Will Get Hit With Obamacare’s Tax Increase. “Congressional budget analysts are now estimating that nearly 6 million Americans — most of them in the middle class — will have to pay a tax penalty for not getting health insurance once President Barack Obama’s health care law is fully in place.” (“Tax Penalty To Hit Nearly 6M Uninsured People,” The Associated Press, 9/19/12)

The CBO Analysis Found That “Nearly 80 Percent Of Those Who’ll Face The Penalty” Are In The Middle Class. “Nonetheless, in his first campaign for the White House, Obama pledged not to raise taxes on individuals making less than $200,000 a year and couples making less than $250,000. And the budget office analysis found that nearly 80 percent of those who'll face the penalty would be making up to or less than five times the federal poverty level.” (“Tax Penalty To Hit Nearly 6M Uninsured People,” The Associated Press, 9/19/12)

In 2016, 4.7 Million Americans – Who Live In Families That Earn Up To $123,000 Per Year – Will Be Subjected To The Individual Mandate Tax In Obamacare. (“Payments Of Penalties For Being Uninsured Under The Affordable Care Act,” Congressional Budget Office, 9/12)

President Obama's Tough "60 Minutes" Interview... In 60 Seconds

And more from the RNC.....

From Comments Disparaging Israel To Characterizing Middle-East Turmoil As “Bumps In The Road,” President Obama’s CBS Interview Goes Awry

Tonight In His CBS Interview, President Obama Twice Disparaged America’s Closest Ally In The Middle  East:

Tonight, President Obama Referred To Israel As Merely “One Of Our Closest Allies In The Region.” OBAMA: “Now I feel an obligation, not pressure but obligation, to make sure that we're in close consultation with the Israelis-- on these issues. Because it affects them deeply. They're one of our closest allies in the region. And we’ve got an Iranian regime that has said horrible things that directly threaten Israel’s existence.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

President Obama Referred To Criticism For His Foreign Policy – Including From Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu – As “Noise That’s Out There.” KROFT: “You don't feel any pressure from Prime Minister Netanyahu in the middle of a campaign to try and get you to change your policy and draw a line in the sand?  You don’t feel any pressure?” OBAMA: “When it comes to our national security decisions-- any pressure that I feel is simply to do what's right for the American people. And I am going to block out-- any noise that's out there.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

President Obama Declared Turmoil Abroad To Be Merely “Bumps In The Road” After Weeks Of Growing Unrest And Violence:

President Obama, On Recent Turmoil In The Middle East Tonight: “I Was Pretty Certain And Continue To Be Pretty Certain That There Are Going To Be Bumps In The Road…” KROFT: “Have the events that took place in the Middle East, the recent events in the Middle East given you any pause about your support for the governments that have come to power following the Arab Spring?” OBAMA: “Well, I'd said even at the time that this is going to be a rocky path. … But I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road because-- you know, in a lot of these places-- the one organizing principle-- has been Islam. The one part of society that hasn't been controlled completely by the government.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

President Obama Offered Yet Another Example Of His Biggest Mistake During His First Term In Office – They Are Piling Up:

President Obama, Tonight: “If You Ask Me—What’s My Biggest Disappointment Is That We Haven't Changed The Tone In Washington As Much As I Would Have Liked.” OBAMA: “I'm the first one to confess that-- the spirit that I brought to Washington, that I wanted to see instituted, where we weren't constantly-- in-- in a political slugfest but were focused more on problem solving that, you know, I haven't fully accomplished that. Haven't even come close in some cases. And-- you know, if you ask me—what’s my biggest disappointment is that we haven't changed the tone in Washington as much as I would have liked.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

·         Just Days Ago, President Obama Told Univision His “Biggest Failure” Was His Failure To Get “Comprehensive Immigration Reform Done.” UNIVISION’s JORGE RAMOS: “What is your biggest failure?” OBAMA: “Well, Jorge as you remind me, my biggest failure so far is we haven’t gotten comprehensive immigration reform done, so we’re going to be continuing to work on that. But it’s not for lack of trying or desire.” (President Barack Obama, Univision Town Hall, Miami, FL, 9/20/12)

·         Earlier This Summer, President Obama Claimed His Biggest Mistake Was Not Being A Good Storyteller. “President Obama said today that the biggest mistake of his first term was not being a good enough storyteller, explaining that he needed to better communicate to the American people why the policies he was pursuing mattered.” (Mary Bruce, “Obama’s Mistake: Not Telling The ‘Story’ Better To The American People,” ABC News, 7/12/12)

President Obama Claimed He Hasn’t Raised Taxes – Just Days After The CBO Found Obamacare Would Raise Taxes On Nearly 5 Million Middle-Class Americans:

President Obama, Tonight: “I Haven't Raised Taxes.” OBAMA: Well, it's a lot of rhetoric, but there aren't a lot of facts supporting it. Taxes are lower on families than they've been probably in the last 50 years. So I haven't raised taxes.  I've cut taxes for middle class families by an average of $3,600 per typical family.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

President Obama Claimed He Takes “Full Responsibility” For His Record – Then Proceeded To Deflect Blame For His Trillion-Dollar Deficits:

President Obama, Tonight: “I Take Full Responsibility For Everything That We Do.” PRESIDENT OBAMA:  “I take full responsibility for everything that we do, Steve.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

·         President Obama: “The Deficit Has Gone Up, But 90% Of That” Isn’t My Fault. PRESIDENT OBAMA: “When I came into office, I inherited the biggest deficit in our history. And over the last four years, the deficit has gone up, but 90% of that is as a consequence of two wars that weren't paid for-- as a consequence of tax cuts that weren't paid for, a prescription drug plan that was not paid for, and then the worst economic crisis since The Great Depression.” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

·         A Reminder: President Obama Is Responsible For “The Most Rapid Increase In The Debt Under Any U.S. President.” “The latest posting by the Treasury Department shows the national debt has now increased $4 trillion on President Obama's watch. The debt was $10.626 trillion on the day Mr. Obama took office. The latest calculation from Treasury shows the debt has now hit $14.639 trillion. It's the most rapid increase in the debt under any U.S. president.”(Mark Knoller, “National Debt Has Increased $4 Trillion Under Obama,” CBS News, 8/22/11)

President Obama Promised He Wouldn’t Ask Seniors To “Pay More For Their Medicare” – But His Medicare Cuts Create Higher Costs For Seniors:

President Obama, Tonight: “What I’ve Said Is You Can’t Ask Me To … Ask Seniors To Pay More For Their Medicare.” OBAMA: “And I've told them I'm prepared to do additional spending cuts and do some entitlement reform  But what I've said is you can't ask me to make student loans higher for kids who need it or ask seniors to pay more for their Medicare…” (CBS’s “60 Minutes,” 9/23/12)

·         According To The Nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Obamacare Cuts $716 Billion From Medicare. (Congressional Budget Office, Letter To Speaker John Boehner, 7/24/12)

·         Obamacare’s Medicare Cuts Will Cause Enrollment In Medicare Advantage To “Plummet By About 50 Percent” And Leave Seniors With “Higher Out-Of-Pocket Costs.” “In addition to flagging provider cuts as potentially unsustainable, the report [HHS] projected that reductions in payments to private Medicare Advantage plans would trigger an exodus from the popular alternative. Enrollment would plummet by about 50 percent. Seniors leaving the private plans would still have health insurance under traditional Medicare, but many might face higher out-of-pocket costs.”(Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, “Report Says Health Care Will Cover More, Cost More,” The Associated Press, 4/23/10)

Corporate Dependency

It’s not investment; it’s patronage with contracts.  It’s Patron / Client politics.  A very old Chicago Way of doing politics.  It creates dependencies, and you bet the politicans expect pay back.

An RNC presser on an example.

CHU ANNOUNCED A LOAN TO FISKER AUTOMOTIVE, PROMISING THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN THE U.S. BUT THE ONLY PLACE THEY ARE MAKING CARS IS FINLAND

On September 22, 2009, Energy Secretary Steven Chu "Announced A $528.7 Million Conditional Loan For Fisker Automotive For The Development Of Two Lines Of Plug-In Hybrids." "Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a $528.7 million conditional loan for Fisker Automotive for the development of two lines of plug-in hybrids that will save hundreds of millions gallons of gasoline and offset millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2016. The project will result in approximately 5,000 jobs created or saved for domestic parts suppliers and thousands more to manufacture a plug-in hybrid in the U.S." (Press Release, "US Energy Secretary Chu Announces $528 Million Loan For Advanced Vehicle Technology For Fisker," US Department Of Energy, 9/22/09)

  • DOE Said Fisker Was "Anticipated To Create Thousands Of Jobs In The U.S. And Provide Substantial Support For Domestic Parts Suppliers Saving Or Creating Approximately 5,000 Jobs." "The project will result in approximately 5,000 jobs created or saved for domestic parts suppliers and thousands more to manufacture a plug-in hybrid in the U.S."(Press Release, "US Energy Secretary Chu Announces $528 Million Loan For Advanced Vehicle Technology For Fisker," US Department Of Energy, 9/22/09)

The Obama Administration Gave Fisker Permission To Build Its First Line Of Cars In Finland

"With The Approval Of The Obama Administration," Fisker Began Assembling Its First Line Of Cars In Finland. "With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work." (Matthew Mosk and Brian Ross, "Car Company Gets U.S. Loan, Builds Cars In Finland," ABC News, 10/20/11)

  • "Fisker Used The First $169 Million In Taxpayer Funds To Bring To Market The Karma, A Flashy $100,000 Hybrid Sports Sedan That It Assembles In Finland." (Matthew Mosk, "Fisker May Never Build Electric Cars In US," ABC News, 5/30/12)

Now Fisker Says It May Never Build Its Cars In The United States

Fisker Automotive May Not Build Its Hybrid Electric Vehicles In The United States Despite Receiving The $200 Million In Taxpayer Funds. "The luxury carmaker Fisker Automotive continues to signal it could ditch plans to build its next generation hybrid electric vehicle in the United States, despite the nearly $200 million in Obama administration loan money it has already received." (Matthew Mosk, "Fisker May Never Build Electric Cars In US," ABC News, 5/30/12)

In February 2012, Fisker Halted Work At Its Delaware Plant And Laid Off More Than 60 Workers After It Failed To Meet Production And Sales Milestones Promised In Its Loan Agreement. "Fisker Automotive, developer of luxury electric cars, halted work at a former GM plant in Delaware and laid off 26 workers there because it ran out of government loan money. Fisker had failed to meet production and sales milestones it had promised in the loan agreement with the Department of Energy, so loan cash was shut off last May. Fisker went on a cash diet, and solicited private investors, while it negotiated a new timetable with the DOE. The cash shortage finally forced the layoff of 26 people at the Delaware factory, which was most of the crew working there to get the former GM plant back into service. Fisker also sped up the layoffs of 40 to 45 engineers at its Anaheim, Calif., headquarters." (James R. Healy, "Fisker, Out Of Government Money, Begins Layoffs," USA Today , 2/7/12)

  • The Layoffs Include 26 Workers At Its Wilmington, Delaware Plant And Another 40 Developing Its Luxury Car Line In Anaheim, California. "The layoffs include 26 workers at a former General Motors plant in Wilmington that Fisker is retooling to manufacture its Nina plug-in hybrid sedan. Another 40 contractors and employees who were working in design and development of Fisker's Karma luxury car in Anaheim, Calif., also have been cut. The layoffs come as Fisker is seeking to renegotiate its loan agreement with the Department of Energy." ("Electric Car Maker Fisker Announces Layoffs In Del., Calif. As It Renegotiates Loan Agreement," The Associated Press , 2/6/12)
  • FLASHBACK: Biden Said The Loan Fisker Was "Seed Money That Will Return Back To The American Consumer In Billions And Billions And Billions Of Dollars In Good, New Jobs." BIDEN: "This is seed money that will return back to the American consumer in billions and billions and billions of dollars in good, new jobs." (ABC News' "Nightline," 10/25/11)

In April 2012, Fisker Laid Off 12 More Workers At Its Delaware Plant. "Fisker Automotive, the startup hybrid-electric carmaker backed by the state and federal governments, has laid off another dozen workers at its Newport-area factory. The layoffs, which occurred quietly Friday, come as the company continues closed-door negotiations with the U.S. Energy Department for a loan that could determine whether Fisker ever builds a car in Delaware. Meanwhile, the state continues to pay the utility bills for the factory, holding out hope that the automaker will still put scores of Delawareans back to work." (Jonathan Starkey, "Fisker Plant 'Absolutely Empty,'" The News-Journal, 4/17/12)

  • "Today, Fisker Employs Only A Small Maintenance Team At The Site 'Protecting Plant Assets And Maintaining The Facility,' Said Fisker Spokesman Russell Datz." (Jonathan Starkey, "Fisker Plant 'Absolutely Empty,'" The News-Journal, 4/17/12)

THAT SAME DAY, CHU ANNOUNCED THE SECOND ROUND OF 1603 CASH GRANTS, A PROGRAM WHICH SENT BILLIONS TO FOREIGN MANUFACTURERS

CARDINAL FASTENER: In June 2011, Cardinal Fastener Filed For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection. "Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Co., the Bedford Heights bolt-maker that became a supplier to the U.S. and European wind turbine industry in 2007, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Thursday and suspended operations. Company president John Grabner, in an emailed statement, said the voluntary filing was necessary 'largely as a result of an impasse in negotiations with Wells Fargo, our primary lender, regarding working capital financing.'" (John Funk, "Cardinal Fastener Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection From Creditors," The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, 6/30/11)

  • In January 2012, Cardinal Fastener Was Acquired By Germany's Wurth Group For Just $3.9 Million. "Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Co. of Bedford Heights, a maker of bolts and fasteners that became a poster child for the wind-power industry, ran into financial problems, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and then in late October was sold to Germany's Wurth Group for just $3.9 million. The new owner's goal for 2012: Get Cardinal close to where it was before its June bankruptcy." ("Deals That Matter," Crain's Cleveland Business Journal, 1/2/12)
  • In January 2009, Obama Visited Cardinal And Said The Stimulus Meant The Company Would Go "From Operating At 50 Percent Capacity To 90 Percent Capacity And Creating Even More Good, Made-In-America Jobs Right Here In Ohio." OBAMA: "That's why, as part of our Recovery and Reinvestment plan, we're committing to double the production of renewable energy in the next three years, and to modernize more than 75% of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes. In the process, we'll put nearly half a million people to work building wind turbines and solar panels; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings developing the new energy technologies that will lead to new jobs, more savings, and a cleaner, safer planet in the bargain. Here at Cardinal Fastener, that could mean going from operating at 50 percent capacity to 90 percent capacity and creating even more good, made-in-America jobs right here in Ohio." (President-Elect Obama, Remarks At Cardinal Fastener, Bedford Heights, OH, 1/16/09)

SOLYNDRA: A Total Of 1,861 Workers Were Laid Off By Solyndra As It Went Bankrupt. "Since September 1, 2010 (impact date), an estimate 1,861 workers have been separated from the firm. This total includes an estimated 649 temporary workers as well as leased workers from West Valley, Aerotek, Oxford Global, GES and Lighthouse Management. Most of these separations occurred at the time of the shut-down of the Fremont, CA facility on August 31, 2011. An additional 85 workers are threatened with separation as the company's operations wind down." (Employment And Training Administration, "Investigative Report TA-W-80,410; Solyndra LLC,"Department Of Labor, 9/12/11)

Billions From The 1603 Grant Program Went To Foreign Wind Turbine Manufacturers

Of The 8,317 Turbines Installed At Major Wind Projects That Received 1603 Awards, 4,513 Turbines (54.3%) Came From Foreign Manufacturers. (Analysis Of 1603 Award Information From The U.S. Department Of Treasury Wind Market Reports By TheAmerican Wind Energy Association, July 2012)

  • Mitsubishi Was The Most Active Foreign Supplier, Accounting For 14.3 Percent Of All Turbines Installed (1,192 Turbines). (Analysis Of 1603 Award Information From The U.S. Department Of TreasuryWind Market Reports By TheAmerican Wind Energy Association, July 2012)
  • Note : Mitsubishi Has No Active Domestic Manufacturing Facilities. In April 2012, It Decided To "Mothball" What Would Have Been Its First, A $200 Million Nacelles Factory In Fort Smith, AR, Citing Weak Demand. "Fort Smith's $100 million Mitsubishi wind turbine assembly plant, which has been sitting vacant since its completion last fall, will remain vacant awhile longer. Officials of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have announced a one-time, $250 million inventory write down, which will include the 'mothballing' of the Fort Smith plant, according to Mitsubishi spokeswoman Sonia Williams." (Rusty Garrett, "Mitsubishi 'Mothballs' Fort Smith Wind Turbine Plant," The Times Record [OK] , 4/2/12)

Five Foreign Manufacturers Accounted For 48 Percent Of All Turbines Installed By 1603 Recipients. • 1603 Grants Created 26,314 Jobs At Foreign Manufacturers Versus 18,159 Created At Domestic Manufacturers. A Renewable Energy Policy Project Study Found That Every MW Of Capacity Installed Creates Three Manufacturing Jobs. (Analysis Of 1603 Award Information From The U.S. Department Of Treasury Wind Market Reports By The American Wind Energy Association, July 2012; "Wind Turbine Development," Renewable Energy Policy Project, September 2004)

Wind Projects Using Foreign Turbines Received $4.8 Billion (57.3%) Of The $8.5 Billion Awarded To Wind Projects Through The 1603 Grant Program. (Analysis Of 1603 Award Information From The U.S. Department Of Treasury Wind Market Reports By The American Wind Energy Association, July 2012)

The Jobs Obama Promised The Program Would Create Have Failed To Materialize

Obama Administration's Claims That The Stimulus' 1603 Green Energy Loan Program Created Over 100,000 Jobs But "A Wall Street Journal Investigation Found Evidence Of Far Fewer." "On federal applications, companies said they created more than 100,000 direct jobs at 1603-funded projects. But a Wall Street Journal investigation found evidence of far fewer. Some plants laid off workers. Others closed." (Ianthe Jeanne Dugan and Justin Scheck, "Cost Of $10 Billion Stimulus Easier To Tally Than New Jobs," The Wall Street Journal, 2/24/12)

  • The Congressional Research Service Said "It Is Recommended That Any Job Creation Estimate Be Viewed With Skepticism."
