Official Statement of U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter:
“The change, ordered by President Mubarak, from an autocrat’s rule to a military dictatorship is a dubious step in Egypt's ‘march toward democracy.’ Precedents suggest that this move may well devolve into a return to the anarchy of the 1950's, with the added danger now of an aggressive Muslim Brotherhood (Ikhwan) working off camera for the occasion to usurp power. I call on the illegitimate military junta to respect the Egyptian Constitution; and recognize the Speaker of the Parliament's legitimate authority to lead a peaceful transition to a true constitutional republic.”
