(CBS) CHICAGO After flames destroyed a historic church on Chicago’s South Side, the governor pledges state money to help rebuild.
But his actions don’t come without criticism.Blagojevich’s financial promise came as churches across the city held collections to help Pilgrim Baptist Church start over.
A member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church board said the state money is very necessary because no amount of insurance could cover the losses.
The church, more than a century old and a cherished historic building in Bronzeville, burned Friday. Pilgrim Baptist leaders say insurance money and a
fundraising campaign will cover some of the losses.
Blagojevich on Monday night pledged $1 million from the state's capital fund to help rebuild the landmark Pilgrim Baptist Church. He also donated $1,000 of his own money.
