I met Durbin on several occasions some years ago when he was a congressman, having taken the place of long time Rep, Mel Price. He would show up fairly frequently at collinsville things and his habit was to always look over the shoulder of the person he was talking to and look around to see if someone more important was in the room. Or maybe someone from the press. I made a point of watching for this habit and was always rewarded. All anyone had to say was, "There's the guy from the Herald," and he'd drop his conversation like a hot stone.
