Byrd and Obama

Respublica writes about Obama signing on with Byrd's re election and moveon.org's support for Byrd. My Dad always talked about "phonies" in politics and Byrd just sounds phoney to me. I wish our good Senator would stay away from him. If he can't, I hope in the spirit of Chicago's "where's mine?" zeitgeist displayed by those kids from Pilsen, Obama's at least getting something for the people of Illinois out of him.

Bob Byrd, for all of his faults, is at least the real deal. He ain't packaged, and he ain't prettified, and he says what he believes and sticks up for it even when it is WAY unpopular, even at home.

TRUE STORY: An acquaintance interned in his DC office. Once a week he would call 10-15 people randomly from a West Virginia phonebook, just to see what was on their mind. More often than not, he ended up helping them solve a problem with the local, state, or federal government. And he got an earful of what they were thinking about washington. Beats the hell out of letting your pollster do the talking...

Except for the hair, I think I'd like the guy. I just had a problem with him as the choice to lead the charge on Rice. That just seemed way too insensitive to history. Nice blog Duke..

Now I read this about Byrd on Powerline and I don't think I'd like him much. Obama should stay clear of him.
